Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. The Department of Health and Children recommends exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life and continue with the combination of nutritious foods for up to 2 years and beyond.
It is recommended that weaning should begin for bottlefed babies between 4-6 months of age. If you have started weaning already your baby may have gotten used to the spoon and has hopefully been enjoying their first tastes of solids. It may be time to introduce them to new flavours, and more importantly, textures. - Give your baby plenty of iron rich foods.
- Increase the range of foods offered to avoid fussy eating later.
- Give your baby a beaker to drink from.
- Remember that your baby’s usual milk will still contribute to a large proportion of their diet yet so don’t decrease the volume too quickly.
- Delay weaning any later than six months.
- Feed your baby processed adult-type sauces, stock cubes or gravies as these can be high in salt/sugar.
- Give up if your baby doesn't accept a new taste first time.
- Feed your baby cows' milk as their main milk drink before the age of one year.
- Be put off by baby's facial expressions - focus on their willingness to eat the food.
